Cluain Eois GAA Clones

The echo of the call issued by Michael Cusack and his co-founders of the GAA in 1884 did not reach Clones until 1886. Then as at other times since, the men of the ancient town of St. Tiarnach, ever conscious of their Gaelic heritage rallied and a branch, as clubs were then called was formed.

Ulster Final '13 Mon V Donegal

2013 Ulster Football Final Monaghan v Donegal

Grounds History

Under the guidance of Mr Peter McAvinney, butter merchant, Mr Charles McKenna Butter buyer and Mr Edmund Maguire, The Diamond, Clones. Like most Ulster teams of the period the Clones team took the name ‘Red Hands of Ulster’ and were known by that name until 1913.

St Tiernach's Park is the principal GAA stadium of Ulster GAA located in County Monaghan, Ireland. Such is its association with the town of Clones that the venue itself is often referred to simply as Clones. "The Ulster final in Clones" With a capacity of 36,000, it hosts major Gaelic football matches such as the Ulster Senior Football Championship final.

The ground is named after Saint Tiarnach (Tigearnac, d. AD 548), who founded Clones as a monastic settlement c. AD 500.  The Ulster Final was held in Clones from 1905 until 2004: before this, a mixture of grounds were used as venues. Between 2004 and 2006, due to increased capacity, the Ulster Final was played at Croke Park in Dublin. However, with the 2007 Leinster Senior Football Championship final being scheduled for the same date, that year's Ulster Final was restored to Clones, with Tyrone narrowly defeating Monaghan by a scoreline of 1–15 to 1–13. The Ulster Final has been held in Clones every year since then. 2019 marked the 75th anniversary of St Tiernach's Park.
